Timmy Hammersley

Timmy Hammersley (born 12 December 1987) was a talented underage player but not perhaps earmarked as the future star he became. He made his senior debut as a minor with the club in 2005 and showed remarkable development in the coming years.

Timmy was part of the Tipperary Under 21 Hurling panel in 2007 and 2008 and was the top scorer in the 2010 Fitzgibbon Cup helping Waterford Institute of Technology to finish as runners-up, scoring 1-11 in the final. The inevitable call up came to Liam Sheedy’s Tipperary squad.

He made his National Hurling League debut as a substitute against Galway in March 2010, and started his first game on 21st March against Limerick where he scored 1-4 in a 2-24 to 0-8 win.

On 30th May 2010, Timmy made his Championship debut coming on as a second-half substitute to score a point against Cork in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final defeat in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

On 5th September that year, Timmy was a non-playing substitute as Tipperary won their 26th All Ireland title, beating reigning champions Kilkenny by 4-17 to 1-18 in the final, preventing Kilkenny from achieving an historic 5-in-a-row. Timmy remained a member of the Tipperary squad until 2013.

Timmy’s remarkable performances and scoring from both frees and play continued throughout the decade and he was often unmarkable at club level. The 2018 County Senior Hurling Final vs Nenagh provided Timmy with the chance to win the one trophy that had eluded him, and he truly delivered for his club. 12 points (4 from play) meant Timmy deservedly won the coveted Man of the Match Award, as the club won just its fourth County Senior Championship.

This display was possibly even bettered by an incredible 19 point haul vs Loughmore Castleigney in Littleton in 2019 in Preliminary Quarter- Final win after extra time. Timmy had been based in Dublin for several years and transferred to Ballyboden St. Enda’s for the 2022 season.

The record books would have to be forensically examined to find anyone that has outscored Timmy in Senior Championship Hurling in Tipperary.
