Conor Hammersley
09 Apr 2024Conor Hammersley (born 1993) was destined for great things from an early age. He had the amazing distinction of playing on all 3 teams that won an historic 3-in-row County U12 A hurling titles from 2003-2005 and continued his prodigious underage career by captain the club to an U16A title in 2009, a rare underage county title for the club.
Conor quickly continued his progression and made his debut for the club seniors as a 17-year-old in 2010. He lined out at midfield for the Tipperary minors in 2011 and by this stage was beginning to establish himself on the club’s senior team. Unfortunately, he missed out on the 2011 County Senior Final defeat to Drom-Inch through injury.
Conor was an important member of Tipperary U21 squads and Fitzgibbon Cup campaigns with Cork Institute of Technology and became a mainstay of his club’s senior team. In 2018, he was consistently brilliant and drove the team on from the middle of the park. He was rightly named Tipperary Club Hurler of the Year following the club’s senior Championship success.
His performances did not go unnoticed, and Liam Sheedy called him in to the Tipperary Senior panel ahead of the 2019 season. Conor was however dealt a huge blow, when he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury in one of his first training sessions with the senior panel. Conor battled his way back to fitness and remained part of the Tipperary panel as they triumphed over Kilkenny, joining the short list of All-Ireland winners hailing from the parish, in the process bringing a second Celtic Cross to the Hammersley household.
